President and Owner of the franchises in Hudson, Western Wisconsin, St. Croix County, and Eau Claire County, Mel Zehm volunteers as the chaplain for the VFW Post 10818 New Richmond and St. Croix County, where he encourages and supports local veterans. Two years ago, a fellow VFW member approached Zehm about assisting in a service project for the Wojcik’s, a local family in need.
Sergeant Steven Wojcik of Strum, Wisconsin, was a U.S. Marine who proudly served his country through both the Marine Corps and the Army Reserves. Wojcik has received the Purple Heart Honor, Meritorious Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal for his sacrifices and injuries while being stationed in Iraq. Wojcik has battled PTSD after being hit by an IED while in Iraq and being injured in two separate explosions. A few years ago, he decided to come forward and share his battle with PTSD to raise awareness and help other veterans with their mental and physical struggles. Wojcik was serving as a trooper with the Wisconsin State Patrol when one of his co-workers nominated him for the TV show, Military Makeover, hosted by Montel Williams.
Shortly after the nomination, Montel Williams and his staff notified the Wojcik family that they were selected for the next Military Makeover project! The community of Strum, Wisconsin, came together to remodel the Wojcik home so they’d have a safe and reduced-stress environment for Steve that allowed him to heal and focus on his health. In 2019, the show was aired on Lifetime through several episodes over two months. During the Military Makeover process, the citizens of Strum, Wisconsin, volunteered their time and efforts to demonstrate their care and appreciation for the Wojcik family, who have been actively committed to helping local veterans. The community offered them various forms of assistance and provided Steve with a service dog that was specially trained for his individual needs. Steve Wojcik and his wife Terri and their three daughters, Alyca, Amberlee, and Alyson, expressed their deep gratitude for the community support and makeover of their home in Strum, WI.
The Military Makeover recognized Squeegee Squad as a sponsor for the Wojcik makeover. Mel Zehm and his technicians at Squeegee Squad Western Wisconsin, Hudson, Western Wisconsin, St. Croix County, and Eau Claire County, came out to the Wojcik home to finish off the renovations with crystal clean windows! “It was our honor to provide window cleaning for this remarkable man and his family,” shares Zehm. “The experience was unforgettable for our staff who were thrilled to participate in this service project.” Eric Braunreiter, the lead technician with Squeegee Squad, Eau Claire County, who serves in the National Guard, jumped at the chance to help a fellow veteran. It was truly a moving experience for all!
